The Evolution of Watching Movies Under the Stars

Adventure #53.

“Kids these days have it all,” or so the saying goes. But there’s one summer tradition that many kids are missing.

There was a time when hot summer nights were spent under the stars, watching a movie at the Drive-in. Accompanied by a bucket of popcorn in one hand and a fist full of candy in the other, a kid could watch the big screen from a blanket on the grass, the hood of a car or curled up in the passenger seat.

Today, the Drive-in theatre is all but a distant memory with only a handful left in Southern Ontario. Thankfully, we have the Movies Under the Stars series here in Burlington to fill the void.

Ready to Watch

Presented by Tim Hortons, Movies Under the Stars offers the chance to create memories of summer evenings outdoors with kids getting to stay up late watching a movie playing on a gigantic screen.

Burlington Parks and Recreation together with Burlington Events have put together a great lineup of family films this summer. Each week, a different city park hosts the event.

We attended the premiere movie of the season, Hotel Transylvania at Nelson Park. Other movies this summer are:

  • Thursday, July 18: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Dog Days at Kiwanis Park
  • Thursday, July 25: Chipwrecked at Optimist Park
  • Thursday, August 1: The Croods at Emerson Park
  • Thursday, August 8: Oz the Great and Powerful at Lowville Park
  • Thursday, August 15: Despicable Me at Mohawk Park
  • Thursday, August 22 is a rain date at Burloak Park

Each week’s movie is hosted by a different Tim Hortons restaurant owner. The owner who attended Movies Under the Stars at Nelson Park was Tom Buscarino. Tom and his wife Lynda own the Tim Hortons at New Street and Walkers Line as well as the location at Burloak Drive and Mainway.

Tom thanked the crowd for coming out and was accompanied by Julie Granger, Regional Marketing Manager for Tim Hortons. Julie worked with City of Burlington staff to develop the “Best Seats in the House” social media contest.

As darkness descended, the movie began and a new generation of kids were able to experience that magical feeling of hunkering down beneath a blanket under the stars to watch a movie in the company of hundreds of other people.
