February is Heritage Month in Burlington and, in celebration, the Museums of Burlington are hosting two free open houses this week!
The first place you’ll want to visit is Ireland House which opens its doors for free on Tuesday (Feb. 21). Joseph Ireland was one of Burlington’s earliest settlers and he and his descendants called Oakridge Farm home until 1985. Today, you’ll find the homestead restored as a ‘living time capsule’ representing the three generations of Irelands who lived in the house in the 1850s, 1890s and 1920s.

The second heritage house/museum for you to explore opens for free on Wednesday (Feb. 22). Joseph Brant Museum is Burlington’s community museum. It’s housed in a replica of the original homestead of Joseph Brant, a famous Mohawk and British captain.

open house you and your family will learn all about Captain Brant’s fascinating story, participate in hands-on activities, enjoy light refreshments and, yes, mingle with historic interpreters. You can also discover what fashion was like in the Edwardian Era by browsing the museum’s current “In Pursuit of Pleasure” exhibit.
You’ll find Joseph Brant Museum tucked away between Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital and Spencer Smith Park at 1240 North Shore Blvd.

Many Burlington residents don’t realize that there’s a mountain in their own backyard. But the families who live in the newly developed Alton Village community can’t miss it poised majestically above their homes. And those who live atop this rocky ridge never tire of their expansive view that extends all the way to Toronto.

Over 450 million years ago, a shallow tropical sea covered a vast area of Ontario and beyond. Along the shore stood what we know today as Mount Nemo.
This elbow of the Niagara Escarpment in North Burlington is “the most beautiful and best quality rock climbing in the Toronto area” according to the Climbers Guide to Ontario Rock.

Mount Nemo is so popular for rock climbing due to it’s unique character and varied climbing on clean vertical cliffs that are 50-80 feet high. Millions of years of erosion have shaped the limestone
into the distinctive slopes that climbers have come to love today.

I haven’t attempted rock climbing myself as it requires special equipment and training. But it sounds like fun just from reading the route names… Fat Man’s Honor, Revenge of the Forceps Baby, I Owe a Lot of Money to a Man Named Guido and Dehyrdrated Yuppie Brains are some of my favourite route names at Mount Nemo.
There are many other adventures to be had on Burlington’s Mount Nemo from hiking trails with abundant views to exploring caves and observing wildlife. I’ll be looking at these activities more closely in future posts on Mr Burlington.

Hello, it’s Mr Burlington here! Please allow me to introduce myself…
A few months back, I had a brainwave. What Burlington could use, I thought, was someone who could harness the power of social media to tell stories about life in Burlington—both past and present—while also helping local businesses connect with the community. I imagined bringing together Burlington-area residents to help them discover more about the city they call home and the businesses nearby that serve them.
Fast forward to now and my business cards have arrived, my Facebook page is steadily gaining ‘likes,’ I just sent my first tweet and my blog is launching today—on Valentine’s Day—all for the love of Burlington!
The stories I hope to tell on this blog aren’t the type of messages that most businesses are used to sharing. Most companies are used to talking at customers, not with customers. So that’s where I come in.
It’s my job to tell fun, engaging stories about businesses in Burlington to my audience of local residents. Maybe it’s a story of how an entrepreneur started their business or of what makes them unique (their “secret sauce”). Maybe it’s a story of a star employee or of giving back to the community. These are stories that build relationships with consumers
and help differentiate a business from the competition. They are also uniquely suited to be told, in bite-size fashion, through social media.
So keep watching, Burlington. There’s a lot more to come.
